It's the measurement used in the tire industry to determine how much tread life is remaining on a tire. The simple answer is this: most tires are 100% tread at a rating of 10/32. Thus, if a tire is 6/32, there is roughly 60% tread remaining on the tire. Tread depth is measured in the main grooves in the center of the tire.

Keep in mind that in most states with inspection laws, 2/32 is considered illegal and won't allow you to pass inspection. Most tires will display an embedded visible colored band if they are at or below 2/32.
